AI Readiness: What 10,369 Websites Reveal
When someone asks ChatGPT about a business, much of the answer comes from what it could read on that business's website. We attempted to scan 13,342 real small business websites; 10,369 loaded and were scored to see how well AI systems can actually read them.

score 40 or below on FAQ signals — most businesses have no structured Q&A content AI can extract
Methodology: 13,342 unique small business websites attempted October 2026; 10,369 loaded and were scored with the CrawlReady v2 scorer (five checks totaling 90 points — crawler access 20, structure 25, metadata 25, content 15, performance 5 — plus an FAQ adjustment: a FAQ score above 70 adds 10 points, 40 or below subtracts 10; a site that blocks every AI crawler is capped at 40). Score bands: Ready 90+, Workable 70–89, Needs Work below 70. Scores reflect what AI systems can read, not traditional SEO rankings.

What this means for your business
Plain-English takeaways from the study — no jargon.
81% of sites have almost no FAQ content
ChatGPT answers questions — and most business sites give it no clear answers to pull from. A simple Q&A page covering services, prices, and hours is one of the fastest wins we found.
The gap is specific — two checks drag almost every score down
Performance (99.0) and crawler access (98.1) are fine. FAQ signals (43.9) and structure (70.5) are not. The fix is answers AI can quote — not a redesign.
1.5% of sites block AI crawlers — usually by accident
152 of the 10,369 scored sites blocked every AI crawler we tested (another 67 let some crawlers in and turned others away). The site looks fine in a browser, but to ChatGPT it's a brick wall. It's usually a security plugin or firewall setting — not a choice the owner made. Most owners have no idea.
Your platform doesn't decide your score — the details do
WordPress (3,784 sites, avg 70.8), Wix (1,105, avg 73.4), and Squarespace (354, avg 69.5) all land within about 4 points of each other. Missing descriptions, blocked pages, and messy headings cost points on every platform equally.
Average score by check — FAQ is the weak spot
Average per-check score across all scored sites. FAQ signals (43.9) trail every other check by a wide margin.
